Abstract Painting
Artist’s Note:
"Abstract". In painting and sculpture abstraction emphasizes an essential character having little visual reference to objects in nature.
"Op Art". A term describing paintings that intend to confuse the eye, a form of optical illusion.
"Neoplasticism". Artists in this category believed that art should not deal with real objects, but only with the expression of the "absolutes of life" which they deemed to be only horizontal & vertical lines and the 3 primary colors.
There are many ways to conceive a painting. A representational artist will first see an object or scene that he believes is good material for his painting style and will translate the subject to his blank canvas. Some will use the subject as a base and will adapt the form to produce stylistic or dramatic effects. Others will start with a blank canvas and develop an abstract form step by step.
In my case, each of the abstract paintings shown started with a thought or idea, often geometric, that was developed almost totally before anything was applied to the support medium. For some of the mathematical abstracts, I used a computer to calculate the curves in a manner consistent with the size of the support medium. All the canvases were laid out using old-fashioned drafting techniques. In most cases the development of the idea took longer than the painting itself.
Some of the paintings can be defined as op art, and some exhibit noeplasticism trends, although I do not view life’s absolutes so simply!
